This is a fine desirable original Model 1861 U.S. Percussion Rifle-Musket. Made by the Springfield Armory, 1862. A .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader dated 1862, this longarm is in fine condition overall. .100% original and complete, the barrel has a bright pristine bore, with a surface area of mixed dove-tail grey, age brown surface patina and oil residue. The breech date is strongly stamped "1862”, along with the “VP” and eaglehead proofs. This gun also retains the original two-leaf rear sight. Lockplate is crisply stamped with a spreadwinged eagle and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” motif in front of the hammer and a strong, sharp “1862” date stamped behind the hammer. Mechanics are excellent. The walnut stock in very good condition overall with just normal age handling dings from use, nice grain, no burnout behine the hammer, nice edges, no cracks or chips. Flat opposite the hammer with two clear, crisp inspector’s cartouches. The weapon has the original tulip-head, swelled shank, steel ramrod with threads at opposite end that were at one time snapped off probably from trying to pull out a ball, this is the only defect on the entire piece. The musket retains its original iron nose cap, iron nipple and bolster screw, "U" stamped barrel bands, sling swivels and "U.S." stamped buttplate. A very attractive example of the standard Civil War infantry weapon. These early '62 Springfields are always desirable and quite difficult to come across one in decent condition being that they were issued early in the war. Would be hard to upgrade.
