Scarce Gunstock Powder Flask by James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield.  A very good example of a scarce powder flask, probably mid-1850's, in the form of a gunstock marked on the top by well known makers "JAMES DIXON / & SONS / SHEFFIELD", bearing their “kite” mark on one side in a rococo cartouche near the top and numbered 94923 on the other side.  The spout is adjustable, marked in drams, with thumb latch and spring in place, works fine. Below the cartouches at the top of the body, the wrist bears a checkered design, and the end the comb, butt and belly of the stock are impressed with raised, scrolling, rococo floral motifs stopping just short of the base of the flask creating the impression of a buttplate.  The raised designs are sharp and distinct.  The top has a mellow brass tone and the body has a medium coppery color with some darkening in recesses.  The spring has some blue. The butt plate has two small dents on one side.  The firm was founded in 1806 and were leading makers of shooting accessories.
