Civil War era surgeon's traveling kit. 3" X 7" wooden box with flat-hook closure. The brass plate on the lid appears to have had some initials at one time that have been scratched off. It has the original red velvet lining and "L.V. HELMOLD", Philadelphia maker label in the bottom compartment. The kit includes six ivory handled instruments, all marked "L.V. HELMOLD". Included are 2 surgical needles and thread. The inside of the lid opens to reveal forceps and scissors. The overall condition of the kit is very good+, one scalpel has an old repair on the handle. Louis V. Helmold was a surgical instrument maker located in Philadelphia from the 1850's until 1897. A nice complete period surgical kit.
