CARTER ENLISTED AS A PRIVATE IN THE UNION ARMY IN INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ON AUGUST 6, 1862. THIS DETAILED AUTOGRAPHED DIARY INCLUDES HIS ACCOUNTS OF SHERMAN'S ATLANTA CAMPAIGN, MARCH TO THE SEA, AND CAMPAIGN THROUGH THE CAROLINAS. CARTER WAS MUSTERED OUT AT WASHINGTON, D.C., ON JUNE 8, 1865. HE WAS A MEMBER OF GAR POST #53 IN LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS, WHERE HE PASSED AWAY ON JANUARY 6, 1920. THE JOURNAL IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH THE BINDING MISSING FROM THE SPINE, SOME WEAR AND CHIPPING ON THE COVERS, AND MINOR TONING IN THE PAPER.
