George Washington National oil portrait. Between 1861 - 1873 E. C. Middleton of Cincinnati published a series of oval oil portraits intended to have the appearance of oil paintings. This original oval oleograph measures 14" X 17". E. C. Middleton started in 1861 with portraits of George and Martha Washington. The portrait is in very good condition overall with the surface having a slight darkening from age. On the original wooden oval frame, still retaining 3 original square nails on the reverse. Full Middleton identification on the lower border entered according to act of Congress 1862. The canvas on the reverse is stamped as well and dated 1861. A significant American portrait.
