Civil War sheet brass stencil. 1" X 2". "M J PIPER", in checking the Civil War database, there were two "Merrill J Piper's", I am concluding that the stencil is that of Merrill J Piper, 16th Maine Infantry, as the other Merrill J Piper was mustered into the 17th Vermont Infantry on 07/06/1864 and deserted the next day 07/07/1864. I don't believe the later would have went to the extent of having a stencil to identify his personal items being a deserter with one day of service.
On the other hand, Merrill J Piper of the 16th Maine Infantry enlisted 09/05/1863 and was discharged for disability on 12/22/1863. The 16th Maine was a hard fighting unit seeing action at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, New Market, Hatcher's Run and Five Forks. The stencil is in very good condition overall. Some paperwork on Private Piper and the 16th Maine Infantry accompany.
